Our National Parks are such a needed treasure for US citizens whose lives are increasingly urban and technology-filled. That connection with nature keeps us grounded in our home--the planet Earth and its whole interconnected ecosystem.
Happy Birthday National Park Service!
The National Park Service (NPS) turns 100 today! Since its founding in 1916, when President Woodrow Wilson signed the Organic Act, the NPS has been working diligently to protect #publiclands in the U.S., including some of our favorite places to paddle.  In ...

A very educational and thoughtful read for anyone trying to understand what's happening in the Middle East. "The process began at the end of World War I, when two of the victorious allies, Britain and France, carved up the lands of the defeated Ottoman Empire between themselves as spoils of war."
It very well may be that no region in the world is having, and will have, more effect on the rest of the world than the remnants of the Ottoman Empire. This is very helpful to someone that wants to try and understand the who, what, when, where, why.

A mama moose and her youngster wandered past our deck yesterday morning while we were eating breakfast. That happened after we were woken up by the crows' warning squawks about a fox hunting for its own breakfast. For our social scene this weekend, we saw an excellent production Saturday night of Chicago put on by the Breckenridge Backstage Theatre, and last night we enjoyed Keller Williams' Grateful Grass concert put on by the Breckenridge Music Festival.

Busy this week: church and coordinating the community dinner on Sunday; the town parking & transit meeting, chores and dinner at the Senior Center Monday; hiking and cooking/sharing dinner with a friend healing from an operation and her husband Tuesday; biking, dentist, and free NRO concert yesterday; the BreckCreate Community Engagement Committee meeting today; and hiking and the Breckenridge Town Party on Friday!

The deadliest mass shooting in American history is yet another reminder why we need uniform background checks and an assault weapons ban in this country. My heart goes out to the families of the victims and to those who were injured. There is absolutely NO reason why a private citizen should own an AR-15 assault-style rifle! A semi-automatic assault-style rifle with a high-capacity magazine is still an especially lethal military-style weapon that allows mentally unstable gun owners such as this one to kill multiple innocent victims very, very quickly. We need to outlaw the ownership of these high-capacity magazines also. Along with outlawing gun ownership for those on the terrorist watch list, we need to outlaw ownership by those with a current restraining order, those convicted of domestic abuse, and those who have been diagnosed with mental disorders prone to gun violence until they have been treated for those disorders. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2016/06/12/orlando-nightclub-shooting-about-20-dead-in-domestic-terror-incident-at-gay-club/
