Calendula is October's birth flower.  It is a member of the Daisy family.  The most common variety is the Pot Marigold.  You'll find Calendula abundant in the summer and fall at florists, home improvement stores, and grocers across the United States.  There are about 20 different easy-to-grow varieties of Calendula, from the Daisy-looking Alpha, to the Chrysanthemum-looking Zeolights.  The most common colors are gold, orange, yellow, and rust.

The Victorian Era saw flowers given certain meanings, or messages.  Calendula means sorrow or grief.  If someone left a vase full of Calendula on your doorstep, it meant they were showing their sympathy in your time of grieving.  "My thoughts are with you," was the message Calendula conveyed.

This flower also has many medicinal and  culinary benefits.  The Pot Marigold blossom is often added to salads, made into tea, or used instead of saffron in cooking.  As a homeopathic medicine, Calendula is helpful in treating insect bites or stings.  It is often planted at the perimeter of a vegetable garden, as the plant is naturally repellent to insects and worms, but also attracts bees to pollinate the garden.

Calendula varieties are often included in floral arrangements, bouquets, and pew decorations for fall weddings.  Combined with Sunflower and Bells Of Ireland, it conveys a sense of crisp morning air and crackling leaves underfoot.

Dried Calendula is an excellent blossom to work with for creating Memorial Beads.  It keeps its color after drying, and doesn't crumble to dust when being crushed.
