The staff are great. But....the entire menu, almost, is an unappetizing mash of flavors. A lot of the dishes didn't make lemon in spaghetti and orange in lamb sausage. And lots of beans are used in every dish. Didn't taste good to be honest. Definitely not worth the money either.

It's not often that restaurants such as Telepan participate in Restaurant Week, but I was more than happy to partake in dinner here when the opportunity came around. Telepan is also unique in the fact that all the dishes offered during the season are part of the normal menu, which gives guests a chance to have a genuine experience. The Shrimp "Fried Rice", served with a coddled egg, and the Burrata Mezzaluna, filled with a creamy mozzarella, were the highlights of the meal for me; the emphasis on Greenmarket Cooking clearly shines through in the flavor and quality of the ingredients. The service was excellent and any questions and requests we had that evening were taken care of with ease. A well-deserved Michelin star.

Telepan New York I was staying at the W and when I got to my room there were magazines on my desk. It has a mini profile of 6 restaurants and Telepan was one. I randomly picked it. I am happy I did. The space: A much more lively crowd vs many prix fixe places in NYC. Tthe room had great energy. A decent chunk of the crowd is what I would call the real housewives of the upper west side. Or perhaps that is just the type that was in my nearest vicinity. Either way, if you need more formal more stuffy, this isn't it. If you want a good energy this place is much better. I narrowed down each course to 2 options and had the waiter pick. He did a good job and seemed genuinely interested in getting me a good meal rather than just randomly picking. Bread Some sort of raisin bread. Fresh, delicious, great texture. Amuse Cheddar cheese beignets Very hot and just the right amount of cheese. Simple but nicely done. First - open egg Very unique Amazing flavors and there was no wasted space or ingredients with this one. This plus a parfait would be a fantastic "savory + sweet" brunch too. But it fit into my dinner mood nicely as well. Love those mushrooms! Second - Squash pierogi Unique and perfectly cooked. Highly recommend this one. Tasted very "modern and fresh" if that makes sense. Main - Trout A very nice slab of fish and I liked the sauce as well. Excellent but not mind blowing. Can't go wrong with this one though. Dessert - Mildred's cake Sweet but not too sweet and refreshing. The buttermilk ice cream was interesting but I didn't love it. With the bill came a coconut macaron to go which was a nice little bite to end the meal. For $55, this is quite a great deal.

Telepan's Restaurant Week 2014 lunch: MUCH DELICIOUS. VERY VALUE. WOW. Absolutely stellar was the poached egg and frisee salad. The wild mushroom mix was was perfectly fried and tossed with the frisee, lending a crouton quality bursting with umami. Oh gawd, so good. The other starter I tried was the house-smoke brook trout on a corn/potato blini which was good but not as standout, and tasted like it looked. The pan-roasted trout was great as well, for an entree. Crispy skin sprawling all over the plate, with a wilted baby spinach salad and pine nuts. Pine nuts don't generally contribute much for me, but they worked wonderfully in this dish, and the portion was generous not like the half-index-card filet you'd expect at some other restaurants. Also good (but too tiny) was the zucchini and egg pasta with housemade lemon ricotta and mint. This was springy deliciousness garnished with summery squash blossoms--and perfectly chewy in the way that only larvae-shaped pasta can be. Tried the pop-ems for dessert. They were good, but a little too intensely chocolate for lunch. The fudgey dipping was especially like... really? More chocolate? But the berry sauce was great for the grown-up molten cocoa puffs. This was my second RW2014 dine and I would rate Telepan's lunch above L'Ecole's -- though both were great and Telepan's was comfortably less filling (I am a goldfish and will not stop eating until the food is gone). Telepan's prix fixe menu offered 5-7 choices per course (and L'Ecole's offered several more, but this led to choice angst).

My wife and I used to like this restaurant but in our last visit we hated it. We took our friends to this restaurant after telling them that we know a real gem in upper west. We all ordered the pasture raised veal and the veal was so hard and difficult to eat even the knife they brought had difficulty cutting it. It was so bad I had to swallow big chunks since I couldn’t chew it properly and I tried so stubbornly to do so. Anyway we called the waitress who went to the chef to convey our issue and the response we got was funny ‘it is chewy because it is pasture raised, I can offer free deserts if you like’. Oh I see, we were all wrong to assume that veal could not have been chewy but there was only a misunderstanding and free desert certainly solves the issue of big chunks of pasture raised veal sitting in your stomach. We are sorry.
