So thrilled with how mentor texts have elevated the thinking and writing of my little first graders, even in math! We analyzed a simple (well, not for them) subtraction story problem, and charted our noticings. Then, students got to search for, and cut, a subject for their own story problems. This is a tough skill for them. But, most did a good job approximating a story problem. We're getting there!

Hi All,

Excited to show how I was able to "hack" the first day of school for my first and second graders. We did a respect gallery walk with lots of talk, and used affinity mapping to create our classroom rules. They loved it! Miss you all
