Multimedia piece on why students take MOOCs. What's your motivation? What do you hope to get out of your courses?

http://chronicle.com/article/Multimedia-Why-Do-Students/133165/
Interviews: Jeffrey R. Young; Photos: Noah Berger; Design: Brock Read. More than 900000 students have signed up for the so-called massively open online courses offered by major universities through Co...

MOOCs are a great way to learn, if designed/implemented well. And as a lifelong learner who already has an MA, I'm much more interested in the knowledge and community of a class than additional certifications at this point (although I see that some MOOCs do offer them). They also allow people to try expanding new areas of knowledge with no financial risk, which is a huge opportunity.

"But the deals Coursera announced Tuesday may well prove to be an inflection point for online education, a sector that has traditionally been dominated by for-profit colleges known mostly for their noxious recruitment practices and poor results. That's because the new partnerships represent an embrace of web-based learning from across the top tier of U.S. universities. And where the elite colleges go, so goes the rest of academia."

I'm not as far away as Tansania, but here in Arkansas (especially the Delta which we like to call LA - Lower Arkansas) we are trying to figure out ways to make online learning work for our students.  I'd like to connect with anyone and everything in terms of resources that can help us to find viable solutions around here.  Bandwidth can be an issue as well in LA.  Any guidance is appreciated.

University of Pennsylvania School of Arts and Sciences has #gonegoogle

We're thrilled to hear (http://goo.gl/0cuAN) that the UPenn students currently piloting Google Apps for Education are enjoying the ride. All graduate and undergraduate students in SAS and the College of Liberal and Professional Studies will move to Gmail this summer, and all incoming freshman will have Apps accounts before they arrive on campus.

Chris Mustazza, director of Social Sciences Computing and Student Technology, hopes that mail will just be the start: "Our overall plan goes much beyond email -- we're planning on actively seeking out ways that the applications included with Google Apps can benefit students through facilitating collaboration and by enhancing courses."

Julia,

I am trying to reach someone at Coursera to talk about the parameters for a potential  college partnership to post and have some OERs hosted on Coursera.  I am the Project Manager for four partners of the Bridge to Success Project (Anne Arundel Community College, MIT, University of Maryland University College and the Open University).  Could you assist.  My contact information is dmlascu@aacc.edu  - 410.777.7078.  Could you please assist or forward to the appropriate party.  We are considering a new grant with Gates in the creating of additional OERs and are considering where to host the content - focused on developmental and remedial mathematics to improve retention for community college and first time students.  Thank you!  David Lascu
