Just finished re-reading "A Wayside Tavern" by Norah Lofts. It's one of the few books I've read where the main character is a building, and you follow various members of a family who have lived in it over the course of 1600 years. The building isn't really the focus of each chapter, but it is always there, the core, the point around which the tale evolves. Highly recommended.
