For the past 25 years, Paula Tracy has been writing about New Hampshire's great outdoors.
A native of Concord, she grew up on the campus of St. Paul's School, where her father was a teacher and coach. She spent much of her childhood roaming the vast woods and trails of the campus, learning in spring to identify wildflowers and bird calls with her mother and making forts with other faculty children.
In the winter, there was skating on the ponds and skiing at nearby Pat's Peak. Summers were spent at the ocean, in the White Mountains hiking and by the lake.
A 1983 graduate of UNH with a degree in English, Tracy began her career in journalism, first on Massachusetts' North Shore. She met her husband of 24 years on a T-bar at Cannon and they moved to the Plymouth area, where her interest in the beauty and variety of the state was joined with her career as a reporter.
She has covered issues of conservation, forestry and tourism, statewide as well as general assignment news. Paula has written a column on skiing and winter outdoors here since 1987 for newspapers, while raising a daughter who is now 18.
She is now focused on online and broadcast formats, dedicating her efforts full-time to writing an outdoors page for WMUR.com She said she hopes to motivate more people to enjoy not only their own backyard, but places a little farther afield that they can experience on a weekend or day trip.
