Just turned a couple of old small cat trees, some heavy cardboard and a couple of cinder blocks into a makeshift cat shelter under the garage awning with some food for any cats stuck outside. Nowhere near "hey, check this out" quality, but it should get the job done.

(Night forecast: low of 37°F, moderate-to-low wind, no rain.)

Comment I posted to SFGate out of frustration and disgust:

I wish people on BOTH sides would stop using this increasingly horrifying tragedy to 'score' political points. Pretty much everything state & fed-level politicians do is based on what will please their core supporters: visit, give speeches, praise, condemn, mislead, speak brutal truths, lie...all of it. They're politicians; it's what they do.

What matters is that tons of people & animals either died horribly, lost everything, or lost loved ones, that the locals are going out of their way to help those in need, and volunteers—First Responders, gas/energy employees, pet shelter workers, entertainers, and more—are coming from all over the country to pitch in. Whose politician said what and when is meaningless in comparison.

I signed up for Nixle alerts just in case the fire comes over Sonoma Mountain... Got several "voluntary evacuation" robocalls for East Sonoma (where I don't live) from the sheriff's office, told it to not send me calls from them, then figured I'd fixed it when I didn't get one for their mandatory evacuation at 2:30am.

Nope. 4:55am, another sheriff "recommended evac" robocall, but this time for part of Santa Rosa...which I also don't live in. Great work training locals to ignore alerts, Nixle. 🙄

The air quality is pretty messed up here — the left-hand side is a pic I took from in front of my house in late summer 2012, the right-hand side is from this afternoon. It's a bit unnerving to have Sonoma Mountain almost invisible…

The cats have no idea why everything smells so smoky, but they're enjoying the new treats & toys I bought to amuse them as a form of self-distraction...

Turns out that the thick smoke is because there's at least four major fires burning out of control here in Sonoma County and neighboring Napa County. Hopefully everyone will get their families & pets out safely this time…

This can not be good - the lights flickered for an instant about an hour ago, now there's enough wood/grass smoke outside that I smelled it through a closed window and thought my house was on fire.

Note to city water department: tear-off 'postcard' surveys generally work better when the backside is oriented so that the postage-free address part is actually on the postcard section. (I'm tempted to mail the section that does have their address on it, given the opposite side is addressed to me and both sides are postage-paid, just to mess with the USPS a bit.)
