Surrounded by mature trees on the edge of Gate Lake, this chalet in Harrington, Canada follows the sloped land it rests upon, minimizing the visual impact on the environment. Take a closer look at the interior here: bit.ly/1LIHvci

The Chantilly Residence was a complete landscape design makeover where we took a long, empty back yard and turned it into a modern and serene oasis. We were able to create a more spacious entertainment area by adding retaining walls on either side of the pathways leading to the fire pit. Instead of adding fencing we used green shrubs to act as a barrier at the edge of the retaining walls which allow the homeowners to overlook the neighboring landscapes, giving the illusion of an extended back yard space. This water conscious yard features ground coverings consisting of pea gravel, river rock, and a modern concrete grid carpeted with stonecrop. Other features include “Rubik’s Cube” planters covered in various succulents, a gentle bubbling water feature with natural volcanic rock placed at the corner, a u-shaped barbeque area with polished concrete counters and stainless steel grill and refrigerator, and a seating area consisting of a collection of different sculptural concrete benches. The main focal point of the back yard is the impressive fire feature, made of corten steel, a corrosion resistant steel which left uncoated develops an outer layer patina that protects the steel from additional corrosion, and filled with black sand with fire that penetrates through for both lighting and heat.

The Lachman Residence gave us a great setting to create a brand new modern landscape to match the equally gorgeous modern architecture of the home. This project gave us the perfect opportunity to implement our water saving #landscapedesign. We did this by using drought tolerant plants and creating interesting patterns by using concrete. You can see examples of these patterns on the driveway which is inset with artificial grass, the undulating pathway along the side of the home, and the concrete pavers in the back yard that have open jointswith a hidden basin below that allows water to filter down. The back yard alsohosts a stunning swimming pool as it's both a zero edge, which is made to havethe water level flush with the ground, and an infinity edge which fades seamlessly with the serene view and reflect the beautiful Los Angeles sky.
