In May, a California-based trial began using Starship Technologies’ delivery robots and 1-800-Flowers’ Mother’s Day flower deliveries. To fine-tune the program, deliveries were made one at a time under the watchful eye of Starship and 1-800 Flowers. The delivery robot used nine cameras and ultrasonic sensors for obstacle detection and was set to travel at approximately four miles per hour – primarily traveling on sidewalks to avoid street traffic.

UPS and FedEx could be offering new, lower rates for deliveries within a 50-mile radius under a new “zone 1” rate, instead of relying on USPS or other local courier services for “last mile”, business-to-consumer deliveries. UPS and FedEx are making changes within their companies to accommodate the growth of e-commerce and the increase in customer demand for faster delivery with more local delivery networks.

During the spring of 2017, UPS will begin improvements to their UPS Ground on Saturday initiative to many major metro areas in the U.S., eventually rolling out to nearly 4,700 cities and towns by November, just in time for the holiday season. This change will allow UPS to improve time-in-transit by allowing customers who request a pickup on Saturday to advance shipments to the surrounding area for Monday delivery, one business day earlier than before.
