You can't beat the location, great outdoor tables with amazing view of the ocean. The place looks busy all day. Our waiter was Ian, and he was fantastic. Very courteous and attentive. The food however, was pretty average. I was only there for lunch, so maybe the breakfast is better. I had the chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries. The fries were OK, not great. The chicken sandwich was salty, and didn't come with any condiments other than the pesto spread on the bun. I asked for mustard, and they brought me two packets. I was surprised that a restaurant as busy as this doesn't have bottled mustard. Also they don't have regular refill ice tea. You have to select a flavor and a size, then they charge you for the refills. How about adding plain ice tea with free refills?

Lovely view in the hub of the tourist activity. Might be a long wait. Omelette was okay, breakfast sandwich was good, bakery items to go arenpretty tasty. Obscure bathrooms. Watch out for the birds, they'll take your food off your plate if you let them!

The food here is excellent and the staff are very nice and friendly. It has a very laid-back island feel to it with very calm music. I will definitely be back!

Came for breakfast. $20 for a dry piece of toast with an egg and two bacon strips on it and the "bottomless" coffee which I had to almost beg to get one refill. Food and service sucked big time. The coffee was good, and as I was staying close I noticed they had a couple of really good live musicians, so I could see coming here for that only.

Great location and the lunch sandwiches were tasty and prices not too high. Service could have been a little more attentive but was not bad. Sitting on the patio outside, watching the scenery and pedestrians, while eating the grilled Ono sandwich was a great introduction to the Big Island! Would definitely return.

When I'm in Kona, I make it a point to brunch at Island Lava Java. An easy walk from the central hotels, it's worth the short wait you may end up facing. You'll be rewarded with the gentle ocean breeze and tropical sun smiling down at you while you munch on macadamia pancakes (try the syrup!) and eggs. Iced coffee is deliciously smooth and made from 100% Kona coffee beans, not a cheap blend. Great for people watching and realizing how content life your life is at the moment.

Food is 3.5 but service is really slow. Definitely overrated. Price is not really worth it. View was nice though.

Great place, funny staff, lovely food, and incredible sunset. What more is there to like?? Ok, here are my favorites... To-die-for Ginger Root Ice Tea (we actually got a Thermos filled for our boat dives to counteract potential sea sickness - at least that was my excuse to get it by the bucket ;o). Ahi Poke, Fish Tacos, Catch of the Day and their Passion Meringe Tart Passion Meringue Tart w/ Macademia nut crust is a must try (or better not, leave some more for me!). Looking forward to go back.
