Trump Has Serious Coke Problem

A former Trump staffer indicated that Trump may have a Coke problem…a DIET Coke problem. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, the hosts of The Young Turks, break it down.

Read more here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/to-your-health/wp/2017/12/12/trump-reportedly-drinks-12-cans-of-diet-coke-each-day-is-that-healthy/?utm_term=.6193923c68c8

“Those keeping tabs on President Trump's diet know that Wendy's and McDonald's are staples. While campaigning, Trump inhaled Filets-o-Fish and Big Macs and snacked on Oreos.

He'd then wash it all down with a Diet Coke.

Just how much diet soda the president consumes, though, was revealed Saturday by the New York Times, which reported that Trump has a button to summon household staff for one of the 12 Diet Cokes he drinks each day.

It's a lot of soda to consume in one day, and — were it regular soda — most research suggests the potential consequences would be alarming. A 12-ounce can of regular Coke has 140 calories and 39 grams of sugar. By instead drinking Diet Coke, which has no calories or sugar, Trump has avoided consuming 1,680 calories and 468 grams of sugar daily.

But the effects of drinking diet soda have been long debated by experts, with some studies raising concerns about long-term health consequences. Experimental research on artificial sweeteners, like the ones found in diet soda, is inconclusive. The Canadian Medical Association Journal found in July that there are very few randomly controlled studies on artificial sweeteners — just seven trials involving only about 1,000 people — that looked at what happened when people consumed artificial sweeteners for more than six months.”

Prisons Ending Family Visits

Prisons in Louisiana are phasing out face-to-face visits for prisoners. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, the hosts of The Young Turks, break it down.

Read more here: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/dec/09/skype-for-jailed-video-calls-prisons-replace-in-person-visits

“One sunny day in October, at the Jefferson Parish correctional center just across the river from downtown New Orleans, Tiffany Burns, 34, was visiting her boyfriend.

The pair had been dating for almost two years and were still giggly in love when a late July knock on the door sent him away. Scooped up by the police after being accused of robbing a suburban bank at gunpoint, Chrishon Brown, 37, was sent to the correctional center while his case worked its way through the court.

A new, unwelcome chapter of their relationship began, with Brown using all his jail funds to call Tiffany, and Tiffany visiting as often as she could.

It was a long drive from her home in the Metairie suburb west of New Orleans, and could sometimes take about an hour each way with the traffic near downtown, but Burns was happy to do it. “When I visit, sometimes I forget about the glass and it feels like we are together again.”

She felt that way during her visit on 12 October, right up until the moment she walked out the jail door and was handed a pamphlet.”

Trump Administration Halting Student Loan Forgiveness

Were you defrauded by a for-profit college? The Trump administration says, ‘Sad day for you.’ Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, the hosts of The Young Turks, break it down.

Read more here: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-education-loans/u-s-not-granting-loan-relief-to-defrauded-students-inspector-general-idUSKBN1E52RB?utm_source=fark&utm_medium=website&utm_content=link&ICID=ref_fark

“WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Education Department under President Donald Trump and Secretary Betsy DeVos has stopped cancelling the student-loan debt of people defrauded by failed for-profit schools and those borrowers face mounting interest and other burdens, its inspector general said on Monday.

DeVos is seeking to redo the process for cancelling the debts of people who attended Corinthian Colleges, which collapsed in 2015 amid government investigations into its post-graduation rates, and other failed schools.

In the final days of his administration, President Barack Obama approved rules speeding up the debt cancellations. DeVos has delayed implementing those rules, saying they would create significant costs for taxpayers.”

So The FCC Won't Let The Internet Be...

Want to show up at the FCC headquarters to protest the dismantling of net neutrality? Their address is: 445 12th Street, SW Washington, DC 20554

It's going to feel so empty without net neutrality. Cenk Uygur, host of The Young Turks, breaks it down.

Read more here: https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/internet-pioneers-fcc-net-neutrality_us_5a2f48a9e4b046175432ca2c

"Internet luminaries, including “father of the internet” Vint Cerf and Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web, have a blistering message for the Federal Communications Commission as its vote on net neutrality looms: “You don’t understand how the internet works.”

In an open letter published Monday, more than 20 industry leaders and pioneers skewered the FCC over its plan to repeal net neutrality rules, which require internet service providers (ISPs) to treat all content equally.

“It is important to understand that the FCC’s proposed Order is based on a flawed and factually inaccurate understanding of Internet technology,” the letter, addressed to lawmakers with oversight of the FCC, reads. “These flaws and inaccuracies were documented in detail in a 43-page-long joint comment signed by over 200 of the most prominent Internet pioneers and engineers and submitted to the FCC on July 17, 2017. Despite this comment, the FCC did not correct its misunderstandings.""

ICE Doesn't Care If You're A Successful Business Owner

The Camposes have been in the US for thirty years and have no criminal record. Cenk Uygur, host of The Young Turks, breaks it down.

Read more here: http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2017/12/despite_pleas_couple_in_us_for_30_years_deported.html

"A South Jersey couple who emigrated to the U.S. from Mexico three decades ago has been deported by authorities.

Oscar and Humberta Campos of Bridgeton left on a flight from Newark Liberty International Airport early Friday morning.

Efforts to allow the couple to stay in the U.S. were led by longtime friends, elected officials including U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, D-NJ, and even the bishop of the Diocese of Camden. But despite those efforts, federal immigration officials Thursday denied their request for work visas to remain in the U.S.

"Senator Booker's office worked for months with the Campos family and federal officials on this case. We are extremely disappointed that ICE has denied the request for a stay of removal and saddened to see another family needlessly torn apart," said Thomas Pietrykoski, Booker's spokesman.”
