I like to take an inventory of the letters and sounds my students know at the beginning of the school year. To do this, I use my Letter and Sound Assessment! I use this as a means to assess and then monitor the progress throughout the year. I begin by showing the students the upper case letters.

This has been something I have been meaning to do for quite awhile now. I wasn't really pleased with the order they were listed in, because they weren't listed in the order I teach them to my own students. So I went ahead and fixed that. Now they are listed in order of difficulty.

Need a quick way to help you better understand and learn about your new students as learners?  Check out what I use with my kiddos!
The new school year is about to begin! This means there will be new kiddos coming through our doorway. What do you do to learn about each and every one of them as learners? Look through their portfolios from their previous grade(s)? Speak to their previous teacher? In addition to those things, ...

I prepaid online months before my reservation date. Upon arriving the rep wanted to add add'l charges. Then we get upstairs to the parking garage to pick up the car. The woman handed us the key and pointed to the space. No one came to the car with us to inspect the condition of the vehicle. When we opened the doors, a rancid smell wafted out. It smelled like a mixture of fish and shampoo. Disgusting. After being up since 1a and traveling all day, we hoped the smell would fade once we got going. Nope, that didn't happen. The smell stayed for the entire time. Once we got out into the sunlight, we could see that the interior of the car was filthy. The car had dirt and loose change all over the floors and clearly hadn't been vacuumed. The car had dust and some sort of sticky liquid splattered all over the inside of the doors/consoles. The dashboard and interior clearly hadn't been wiped clean prior to it being rented. It was filthy and disgusting. We felt dirty every time we went in it. Because the car was filthy and smelled horrible, we brought the car to exchange it in Siesta Key the next day, however they didn't have any cars available. The customer service rep was anything but helpful. She simply didn't care. It would've been nice to hear, "We can call you as soon as we have a car available." Instead we heard, "Well, you can take the car though the car wash." (Ummm...not our responsibility. Nor would that help the filthiness of the interior or the odor.) And also, "Well, we close in a few hours, so there is really nothing we can do." Teach your customer service reps compassion. We will NEVER rent from Budget/Avis again after this experience.
