In defiance of the Trump regime’s multi-pronged assault on dissent, democratic principles, constitutional freedoms and even the truth itself, I offer you an EP of protest songs performed and recently recorded by me and my co-conspirator Kelly J. Rath, aka The Study Session.

[ samizdat-001 ] Thug Nation explores themes of immigration, gun violence, dementia and the burden of responsibility borne by those who support our wannabe dictator.

Just what is samizdat (sah’-miz-daht)? I’m glad you asked. During the Cold War, oppressed people shared dissident art and literature in secret, disguising it in order to exchange it with fellow dissidents right under the nose of the Soviet regime. It was know as samizdat.

Given the potential dangers of upsetting the thin-skinned leaders of our current regime and the thugs who march with them, it appears clandestine sharing of dissident thought — samizdat — is going to make a comeback.

The heart of this project is the distribution among the resistance of secret cassette tapes, but you can still listen to the songs via the unsecured public medium of Bandcamp. Have a listen below and please share with your fellow dissenters!

For more about the [ samizdat ] project (and those clandestine cassettes), go to: http://www.samizdat000.com/.

If you’d like to get advance information of upcoming projects like this one, please sign up on my mailing list: http://eepurl.com/cUjH2X

Thanks, and happy listening, comrades!

During the Late Joys gig last Saturday at the always fabulous Carousel Lounge, we did a bunch of old material among which were some of my soapbox songs (Ghost Town, Twisty System, Dresden, among others). Matt bantered that next on my to-do list was a song about gun violence, which as we all know is the scourge of today. Well, alright. I took up the challenge and wrote this little number.
