Basic Information
I'm southeast Asian, and I love rice - like really love rice,a whole lifetime affair. If rice is cooked well I'll enjoy it straight out of the cooker, steaming and aromatic. There's a lot of places that serve rice as an afterthought, but this is the first I've found to specialize in savory rice (people already know how good sweet rice can be). Ippudo & co showed New Yorkers that ramen could be a rich and flavorful meal, instead of the 99¢ prepackaged stuff that was its stereotype -- and it's about time that a place opened that uses good ingredients and a well-thought-out cooking process to bring high Quality (thank you Robert Pirsig) to rice. I had a chicken seared rice with brown rice, and it was very good: the marinated chicken thigh was tender, flavorful, and had a pleasantly baked exterior. The rice is the key though: instead of the big mush that we're used to from Chinese takeout, it feels like each grain has texture to it, like a combination of baking and frying. Lots of vegetables, a nice tang of garlic and spice, hot and quick. Did I mention that I love rice?
