Cool use of R.
Last Saturday, the New York Times published a feature article on the wealthiest 1% of Americans. The on-line version of the article included interactive features like this interactive map showing where your household ranks in the country and in local regions. Network geeks, I have a challenge for you.

You have two machines that need to communicate with each other. There is a firewall in between. You don't have access to it. You don't have root on either machine. Your program relies on a high numbered (unprivileged) UDP/TCP port, but the program was started by a different user id, which you don't have rights to. You do have access to an unprivileged account.

Supposedly the firewall configured to allow your apps to communicate. Yet your program doesn't work. How do you prove that the firewall is misconfigured?

Thanks Jim. I know of netcat. The extra challenge was to be able to use ports being actively used. In the end, I wrote a simple perl program and ultimately the service that was using the ports had to be stopped in order to use the test program.

Smartphone means death of SMS, right?

right but i think sms  is still going to be the most common format shareable between platforms.  you can text from dumb phone, text from iphone, android, pc, there are even voice to text numbers. maybe communication flows to the most common platform.
