Email Phishing Scams and Viruses and Malware
It is difficult to know what is a legitimate email and what is going to make your computer a zombie.

I just got an email this morning from noreply@fbo.gov which appeared to be suspicious.  Here is the content of the email:

Monday, July 20, 2015, 09:26 am

Mandatory reset of passwords is required every 90 days. You have 10 days, to reset your password or your account will be disabled. To prevent any disruptions, please update your password using the following link: https://www.fbo.gov/

--- End of Email ---

Please Note: You should not do the following unless you absolutely know what you are doing.

On a computer we have in our office to explore these types of emails for our clients, we dissected the link in the email and determined it was safe on the surface, but needed to find out if the site at http://www.fbo.gov has been hacked.

Fortunately, the website home page stated the same request as in the email.  Here is what they have posted on their website:

Important Password Update - Mandatory reset of passwords is required every 90 days. Registered users will receive an email notification to remind them of this requirement.
If your account has been disabled, contact the Federal Service Desk at 866-606-8220 (Monday - Friday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET)

--- End of Website Post ---

We again felt safe and clicked on the link using our test computer and determine the email and the website is safe.  Our end-point protection anti-virus solution did not stop us.  It is safe.

I am sure as stated on their website this is an attempt to ward off any future cyber attacks on U.S. Government websites.

If you are a Government Contractor, you should immediately go to http://www.fbo.gov and login and change your password to a VERY complex and secure password.  Your password is the first defense against a data breach.  It is a pain to use different passwords and make them complex, but the rewards out weight the inconvenience.

You know what is coming next... an email that is similar in nature, but this time FAKE with the intention of grabbing one of your business or organization's most valuable assets - your data.

Until next time... Stay safe on the Internet. Always use caution.  Question everything!

Different companies have different IT Support needs.  There is no one perfect answer for every company.  I also think there are more issues to consider when deciding whether to hire an IT Staffer or to outsource IT Support.

In the Internet of Things, it is difficult for one person to keep up with the changes in technology, as well as, physically supporting multiple issues for an entire company.

IT support is not so different than all the other roles in your company.  Why do you have different people handling different responsibilities.  Because one person cannot do it all.

Please consider what this article is pointing out.  We are here to answer your questions and discuss your company's specific IT Support needs.
