3D scans of art, really cool! You can see a lot of detail on the pieces that you might not get looking at them in person, especially on the bottom / interior.

Denali National Park in Alaska, Eielson Visitor Center. It was drizzling all day... thankfully we were on a bus most of the time.

Also, this terrain reminds me of Skyrim. Which makes sense... a lot of Denali is tundra.

Places that look safer turn out to actually be safer. So people are actually pretty good judges of the sketchiness of a place?

Article has a nice heatmap for NYC, raw data is at http://pulse.media.mit.edu/.

The future of making neighborhoods safer might lie in simply making them look safer. That's what researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Austrian Institute of Technology concluded from results gathered on this website, which allows visitors to rate pictures of urban areas like they're Tinder headshots: Initially, the tool covered only New York and Boston in the United...

At first I thought the photographer actually put hipster clothes on ancient statues... then I saw it was Photoshop. Slightly disappointed, but it's still fun to see - gives them a whole new look!

Maker Faire was a lot of fun! Especially awesome was ArcAttack, a Tesla coil band - two musical Tesla coils, a metal suit, plus a giant metal cage.

Pictures and videos to come later. (On a side note, I counted 7 people wearing Google Glass throughout the day. Not sure if that's a lot or not, given that this is the Bay Area.)

Hello, world!

I have a new job. :)  After four-plus great years at Google, I decided to try out the startup life. I've recently joined Lever (https://lever.co/) in SF, to build awesome user-centric hiring (ATS) software!

I've been having a great time so far! My first day, I fixed a bug and conducted the daily release of the main Lever app, and I'm already being quite productive just a short time into the new job.

Looking forward to what the future brings!

Neat :)
Also I find it funny that interview schedule is the only black and gloomy screen among cheery screenshots :D

Twitch Plays Pokemon just beat Pokemon Red

Glad I didn't go to sleep early tonight - I've kept it open on a laptop off to the side for the past couple weeks, and it's awesome that I got to be there for the finish!

If you haven't heard of it, it's tens of thousands of people collaboratively playing a single game of Pokemon, by spamming commands in chat. To make things even harder, there's a 30-second delay before you see your commands on the stream. It's interesting from a control theory and social organization perspective - wonder if some college student will write a paper about this :)

I'm impressed at the amount of grassroots coordination that sprung up, via Reddit (http://www.reddit.com/r/twitchplayspokemon/) and a shared doc (twitchplayspokemonstatus). Yay technology!

On using UX principles to misdirect (such as click-to-opt-out). A good read! Even if you don't have UX experience, it should be pretty readable.

A paraphrased transcript of my talk at SMX Munich 2013. Let's start with a little game. In iOS, there's an ad tracking feature that allows advertisers to identify you (albeit anonymously). It's turned on by default. Let's see if we can work out how to turn it off together.

Found this little guy earlier today. It was very shiny, which caught my eye - the picture doesn't quite do it justice.

I've been reading Girl Genius, a fantasy-steampunk webcomic, for years. Really high-quality writing and art (full-color!), with a consistent 3 updates a week. It's nice to be able to support them now that I'm able to!

Check out the comic here (online, full-color starts on Vol 2):

Advance warning - you may get hooked!

On a side note, it's interesting to see that even if you self-publish like they do, there's a big up-front cost for selling print books, unlike with selling digital goods. It's nice that sites like Kickstarter let small publishers like them get an up-front commitment before starting a print run (and if they don't get funded, you don't have to pay anything).
It's time to print a lovely printed-on-actual-paper edition of Girl Genius Volume 12! We also hope to reprint all the previous Volumes.

The steam punk stuff feel like Fullmetal Alchemist, making stuff out of thin air (as in chemical in the air)...
