Pine Crest School Named "Green School of Excellence."
Pine Crest School Boca Raton Campus entered the Palm Beach County Green School Recognition Program for the 2012-13 school year. There are three categories for the Green School Recognition Program, School of Promise, School of Quality, and School of Excellence. The application for this program was submitted by Ryan Gallagher, Director of Facilities, Security and Safety, Jean Sungenis, Green Team Chair, Nick Campbell, and Marcia Chackan on behalf of the students, administration, and the Green Team Committee (which is one representative from each department on campus).
It contained 60 pages highlighting all of the green school initiatives that the Boca Raton Campus endorses in the daily commitment to being a "Green School". These areas included the, Lower School Neighborhoods, Mazer Butterfly Garden, Science Animal Habitat Courtyard, Pine Crest Organic Garden, Morris Family Amphitheater, along with various other areas of the campus that are used as outdoor learning labs and includes curriculum with "Think Green" initiatives. The field trips that classes take with the "Green Initiative" theme where the Boca students learn about the earth and environment.
The MS and LS Student Council students, Middle School Roots and Shoots students and the Lower School Green Team Club students, spread the word throughout the campus to everyone to "Think Green". They encourage all students, administrators, faculty and staff to include the thought process of Recycle, Reuse and Reduce in our daily lives both at school and home. Pine Crest School Administration endorses all green school efforts and encourage "Think Green" through academics, the students clubs, and also through the Parents Association fundraisers.
The faculty at Boca Raton Campus utilizes the "Think Green" thought process in their curriculum and teaching formats.Ryan Gallagher encourages all green initiatives throughout the facilities and security departments on campus, with energy saving lighting, equipment with energy star ratings, and the close monitoring of all conservation of energy and water, they have also created green parking spots for green energy vehicles. There are many types of recycling bins throughout campus for recycling of batteries, shoes, lights, cell phones to name a few. The Technology Department along with the Administration have students using laptop and Ipads as student learning tools, which reduces the amount of paper needed due to no printing necessary, send electronically thinking process.
Mr. Scott Wing, Head of School, Ms. Jean Sungenis, 2nd grade teacher and Mr. Nick Campbell, 4th grade teacher, attended the Green School Recognition Program Luncheon on May 1, 2013 at the West Palm Beach Marriott. They proudly received the "Green School of Excellence" award for the Boca Raton Campus.
