You may not be aware that Metrodata Ltd. is one of the UK’s largest independent providers of low-cost plug-in #transceivers for optical fibre connectivity, under our 'MetroWAVE' brand.

#Fibre users need to understand the complexities associated with fibre interfacing. This requires an appreciation of the full technical characteristics of individual devices, both physical and optical. Firstly, there are a number of different physical formats for transceivers, including the most common '#SFP', 'SFP'+ and '#XFP' types. Then, parameters including 'transmission power', 'reception sensitivity' and overall 'loss budget' are key to ensure not only that transceivers at each end of a fibre link will be compatible, but that communication will be effective given both the length of fibre and any patching, splicing or even optical multiplexing, which may exist along the route.
It's important to remember that using high-powered devices over too short a length of fibre can cause damage by over-driving the delicate optical receiver element of transceivers. It's often tempting, for example, to check the configuration of network switches or routers prior to deployment by first connecting them back-to-back on the test bench, without considering the implications for optical transceivers which may have been chosen in anticipation of use for a fibre link of 20km or more. Having a range of low-cost optical attenuators to hand is always useful!

Once the correct physical format and optical characteristics have been identified, consideration must be given to the intricacies of compatibility between plug-in transceivers and the corresponding 'device drivers' of different vendors' active networking hardware. Most major platform vendors have recognised that they can augment the sales value of their networking hardware by using specific interface driver code to verify that their own branded (and frequently very highly-priced) optical interfaces are being used. Since these will typically be much more expensive than generic MSA components (i.e. 'Multi-Source Agreements', the broad functional standards adopted by transceiver manufacturers), a significant industry has grown around the supply of 'vendor compatibility coded' transceivers from lower cost suppliers.

Offering a wide range of transceiver formats, including all of the common types, Metrodata supplies both standard Multi-Source Agreement devices and vendor coded transceivers, ensuring compatibility with host equipment. The company also offers devices for specialist applications, such as those incorporating automated OTDR-based fibre length measurement with fault detection alarm generation**. Within our UK development and test labs, Metrodata works hard on behalf of our customers worldwide to ensure ongoing compatibility with networking and telecoms equipment from all of the major manufacturers.

Expanding upon Metrodata's popular #embedded #ethernet #network #monitor and tester the NetTESTER, the new NT10G05 offers network testing and monitor at speeds up to 10Gbps.

Like the rest of Metrodata's NetTESTER network performance assurance devices, the NT10G05 provides a cost-effective way of accurately measuring the performance of newly installed network circuits up to 10Gbps, comprising either 'Layer-2' Switched Ethernet or 'Layer-'3 IP Routed infrastructure. Thereafter, ongoing 'in-service' performance up to 10Gbps can be readily monitored and alarms raised in the event that performance falls below pre-defined levels, most likely related to the 'service level agreement' (SLA) criteria established with the Service Provider in relation to Throughput, Latency, Jitter, Packet Loss and overall 'availability' for a given link.

We are pleased to announce the forthcoming release of a new member of the #MetroCONNECT '#Ethernet #Demarcation Device' (EDD) family, the FCM10G05, for use with 10Gbps Network Services.

Building on the success of our existing #EDD line-up, including the FCM9003 and FCM9005 products for 1Gbps operation, the FCM10G05 offers rich functionality at an attractive price-point for Telecoms Carriers and Ethernet Service Providers seeking full end-to-end performance visibility and service management on behalf of their customers.

The FCM10G05 supports a similar feature-set to other members of the MetroCONNECT FCM900x series of EDDs, including advanced Circuit Activation Testing and in-service performance monitoring, interfaced via SFP+ flexible-media ports.

RFC2544 and Y.1564 test methodologies, supporting both Ethernet and IP addressing, facilitate detailed performance characterisation of both Switched Ethernet and IP-Routed WAN topologies. Furthermore, through support of both ITU-T Y.1731 and 'Two-Way Active Measurement Protocol' (TWAMP), the FCM10G05 offers highly precise in-service performance monitoring across both Switched and IP-Routed infrastructure networks. Both of these functions are enabled via our unique 'MetroSAM' (Service Assurance Module) hardware, which also performs wire-rate address-swapping loop-back for both Ethernet MAC and IP addressed packets, enabling the FCM10G05 to be used as a reflector point for both MetroCONNECT and third-party test equipment.

Regular Demarcation functions, such as 'Dying Gasp' power loss alarming, VLAN traffic/service segregation (including Q-in-Q), prioritisation and policing, are fully supported, along with comprehensive 'tunnelling' for Layer-2 Control Protocols (L2CP), to ensure full transparency to Customers' critical network control traffic, across the Carrier infrastructure.

Comprehensive Network Management options are provided, including Local Terminal connection or in-band via Carrier Ethernet OAM, SNMP, Telnet/SSH or Web Browser interface, with support for TACACS+ User Authentication where required.

We have just launched a range of cost-effective 'always on' embedded #LAN & #WAN #Performance Test and Monitoring solutions for the Enterprise market.

Our new NetTESTER provides the tools Network Managers need to be able to fully test LAN and WAN performance 'on demand'. The NetTESTER is an 'always available' network test device that is embedded within the #Enterprise network. Operating under remote management control within both Switched and IP-Routed infrastructures, and supporting RFC2544 and ITU-T Y.1564 test profiles, the NetTESTER device can generate test traffic, perform line-rate loop-back with address-swapping, and submit network health reports back the Network Control Centre, as a vital aid to performance verification and trouble-shooting.

Moreover, through support of key performance monitoring protocols, including ITU-T Y.1731 (#Carrier #Ethernet Service-Level OAM) and IP-based 'Two Way Active Measurement Protocol' (TWAMP), the NetTESTER can provide 'always-on' monitoring of network characteristics during in-service usage and generate alarms in the event of breaches of pre-defined performance levels, which may form part of the Service Level Agreement (SLA) between the Enterprise and its Contracted Service Provider(s).
