"We have a name for the kind of person who collects a detailed, permanent dossier on everyone they interact with, with the intent of using it to manipulate others for personal advantage - we call that person a sociopath."
The Social Graph is Neither. I first came across the phrase social graph in 2007, in an essay by Brad Fitzpatrick, though I'd be curious to know if it goes back further. The idea of representing r...

I'm going to do a proper blog post about this later in the week, but until then: Here's a peek at a short film by Gus Bendinelli about Portland Poetry Posts. Or boxes. Or whatever you choose to call those things where people share words on poles.

Nice to hear the Planet Money team explaining the situation with software patent trolls to a broader audience. The biggest problem for small- to mid-sized businesses is that they can't afford to play the mutually-assured-destruction patent game:

"Michael Smith, the attorney in Marshall, Texas, represented one of
those defendants. He was pretty sure they would have won the case if
they'd gone to trial. But his client settled anyway. He says sometimes
it makes more sense to settle and pay a license fee than to spend $2
million to $5 million on a court case."

Related, and worth a read for some of the counter-arguments:

Are software patents evil?

(PS Anyone know of a way to put more than one link in a post? Or is this area just plain text?)

Huh. This is a really interesting article. I'm amazed at some of the business practices that are allowed to go on in this country.

Hitch:

"We need candidates who know about laboratories, drones, trade cycles, and polychrome conurbations both here and overseas. Yet the media make us complicit in the myth—all politics is yokel?—that the fast-vanishing small-town life is the key to ancient virtues. Wasilla, Alaska, is only the most vivid recent demonstration of the severe limitations of this worldview. But still it goes on. Hence one's glee at the resulting helpings of custard."

Reconnect with reality and take it in through all the senses...a static picture doesn't substitute for experience. It's just a souvenir that fades with time.

I really enjoyed Steve Yegge's talk this morning at OSCON Data, including his 'prime directive': "Always work on stuff you love!"

The Street Roots poems will be on display through this Saturday. There's a map of all the poetry boxes/posts here: http://poetrybox.info

(At least all the ones I know about so far. If you know of any that aren't on the map, please send them in!)
