Last week, the Oversight and Investigations subcommittee of the
House Energy and Commerce Committee, chaired by Representative Tim Murphy (R-PA), convened a forum with parents, doctors, and service providers to discuss reforming mental health law and policy for people with severe mental illness after the Newtown tragedy. Noticeably absent from the conversation: people like me, people living with a mental illness.
When Representative Murphy appeared on CSPAN I called the show to find out why people with mental illness were not invited to testify. His response: “I am not going to bring a convicted felon out of prison to talk […] I am not going to do that here that is a dangerous situation”.
