Call for Papers:
Sequential SmArt: Teaching With Comics

Sequential SmArt will bring together creators of comics and graphic books, scholars and teachers from a range of disciplines who teach using comics, and an audience of educators who work with students from early childhood to the college level. The conference will be held May 18-19, 2012, at Juniata College in beautiful Huntingdon, Pennsylvania.

Keynote addresses will be given by Matt Madden (author of Drawing Words and Writing Pictures and co-editor of The Best American Comics) and by Eric Shanower (author of Age of Bronze, two-time winner of the Eisner Award—the Oscars for comics and graphic books—as Best Writer-Artist).

We invite proposals for twenty-minute presentations on topics such as:

* Innovative ways in which comics can help explain topic in all sorts of disciplines, including the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities;
* How creating comics can teach writing and foster literacy;
* How specific comics can address state educational standards;
* How the analysis of comics can reveal themes and patterns that illustrate a society and culture at a particular time;
* Linking research in the scholarship of teaching and learning to the use of comics in the classroom.

Proposals are due January 4, 2012. Please submit an abstract (150 words max) and a résumé or c.v. to Dr. David Hsiung at hsiung@juniata.edu or via regular mail to History Department, Juniata College, Huntingdon, PA 16652. Feel free to write or call (814) 641-3534 if you have questions.
