Super Hexagon.
Miranda's elementary school was a parent participation program, so I spent a couple of hours there every week for several years. And one of the most peculiar aspects of that experience was watching ki...

Using Google+ for the first time in a while; it is so creepy. "Just in case you didn't know, we're watching your friends. We'd like to do a better job of watching you."

An attempt to understand a recent shift in my game playing habits.
I've always been an unconventional video games blogger, because of the low volume of games that I find time to play, but that's become much more the case over the last year. I was surprised to...

Thanks! And yes, there are plenty of such games, though I'm also going through longer stretches of playing games less. Which is fine, too: I'm glad games remain present, but I'm glad I'm maintaining a bit more independence.

Trying to get my thoughts in order about consensus, plans, experiments.
My current (mild) bugaboo at work: agreeing on plans. “Bugaboo” is really too strong a term, but it's something that I've been probing a bit. Like a lot of my coworkers, I'm not a big fan ...

Notes on my favorite talk at GDC this year, fascinating for reasons far beyond game development. Brian Sharp, Concrete Practices to be a Better Leader: Framing & Intention
I wasn't planning to go to this talk until I heard his pitch in the Flash Forward session; something in that pitch reminded me of a Gerald Weinberg / AYE approach to personal interaction, so I wen...

Why I'm a lot less happy with Google than I used to be, and am actively looking for alternatives.
A sentence which I have a hard time believing that I'm writing: for the last month or so, the default search engine on my two home computers has been set to Bing. Not because Microsoft has done su...

Dragon Age 2
Dragon Age 2 starts off with a frame: the Seeker interrogating Varric about Hawke's deeds, and calling bullshit on him. So: it's first of all a game about story. But not a story with a clear ending or...

Walking to work.
I've been walking to work ever since I started working at Playdom three years ago. In fact, that's part of why I took that job: I saw Steve Meretsky on a panel at GDC 2009, looked up the web page for ...

Orsay games. I enjoyed writing this one, I hope it makes sense.
On entering the Musée d'Orsay, you are confronted almost immediately with a sight that is familiar to anybody who plays video games, namely a textbook example of male gaze: This is Femme piquée pa...

I've been trying to understand recently my reaction to various projects that label themselves at agile; to that end, here's my attempt at offering a definition.
I've had a few experiences recently (e.g. at one of the GDC talks that I attended) where somebody uses the word “agile” to describe a process that doesn't sound particularly agile to me. So I ...

Sumo Logic has launched! What I've been working on for the last year; great company, great people, and a product that's very useful for anybody building a software service or just having to deal with a bunch of servers.
The startup that I've been working at for the last year, Sumo Logic, has now launched its product! Our product is a service for gathering, searching, and analyzing logs: if you have software that&...

Bug trackers as information absorbers, and other ways in which they're actively anti-agile.
Once again, I find myself at a job that uses bug-tracking software (JIRA this time, as in my previous job; the job before that used Bugzilla); once again, I'm finding that the bug-tracking softwar...
