The thing that sets Derby City apart from every other gym in the city is its combination of top level instruction, atmosphere and large class size. The instruction is top-notch and is proven by the performances its competitors have put on at top level tournaments, medaling at some of the biggest BJJ tournaments in the world. The instruction is equally as efficient at taking you from someone who knows nothing on your first day to someone who feels confident on the mats. The atmosphere is amazing. The gym is in every way a reflection of its black belt coach Nick Albin. Walking through the door and onto the mats on your first day is much easier when you’re greeted with a smile and a handshake as opposed to tough guy posturing. His personality extends into class with the perfect mixture of goofing around and serious training. This gives Derby City an environment of a bunch of tough guys/girls all having fun and pushing each other to be the best they can be. The large classes are great because you can always find someone your size to train with, or bigger if you want to work against big guys, or smaller to work against small guys. If you're trying to work on a specific technique not only will the instructor know it and take time after class to teach it to you, but you can also probably find someone who has based his or her style around it to drill with and see/feel the technique in a roll. This sets the gym apart from other gyms where you might be relegated to always being the big guy or always being the small guy and never have an opportunity to see how your jiu-jitsu fairs against people of different sizes, and if you want to add a new technique into your game you can always find people to help instead of being forced to start from scratch. You can no doubt find any one or two of the above characteristics at a BJJ or MMA gym in Louisville, but I don’t know of any place to train at that has all three except Derby City MMA.

I am in the jiu jitsu program at derby city. There isn't a better place in town to practice and learn this martial art. Whether it's your first day or you've been training for years, you will not be disappointed by the high level of instruction and training partners at this school. Classes are 3 times a day, so no matter what your schedule, you can find a time to come in and train.

Derby City MMA.. Is literally my home 4.. sometimes even more days of the week... the majority of people at this gym are genuine hearted and I consider them my family. You will literally find people whom love to train hard and you will grow to love each member for their personality the same as they will love you. Come train with me and the "beast(s)" at DC! My smiling face will be there to welcome you!

My son Zachary started when he was 10 years old, he had no self confidence but all that changed when he met Chewy and the other instructors. They have helped mold him into the strong young he has become. Zach is now 12 and in the 7th grade, he has the tools and self confidence to handle situations that may arise as they often do in middle school. All I can say is that thanks to Derby City I do not fear for my sons safety in school. The atmosphere at Derby City has been a very positive experience and I highly recommend it.

This gym is no joke! As someone who only goes around 1-2 times a week, I am seriously impressed with the instructor's desire to see everyone grow in their abilities and teach at a high level. This gym not only trains world class BJJ competitors, but also gives entry-level accessibility for people who just do it as a hobby or way to stay fit. The group of guys and gals that train here are friendly and I've always felt safe training here. The rate seems fair for how much you get access to, while the restrooms are something to be desired (I'd give this place 5 stars if it had better restrooms). I always try and get people to go with me and can't speak highly enough of the great things going on here.

This is a great gym for BJJ. The head instructor, Renato Tavares black belt -Nick "Chewy" Albin, is a great teacher and a really nice guy on and off the mats. The women and men that train here are always helpful and respectful, in addition to tough on the mats. DCMMA has the added bonus of being the best value proposition in town, although you're still getting top notch training. Highly recommended.
