The SS United States transported a number of dignitaries "across the pond" for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on June 2, 1953, including Walter Cronkite, the Conservancy's former advisory council chair, who covered the ceremony for CBS. Executive Director Susan Gibbs' grandmother was invited to the coronation, and while William Francis Gibbs, the ship's designer, didn't accompany his wife on the transatlantic crossing, he made sure she was treated to a fine bottle of Dom Perignon.
A toast to you, Queen Elizabeth II! Happy Birthday from the SS United States Conservancy! http://ow.ly/i/iHupk

How did the SS United States sound in her golden years? Every night at sea, the music flooded the lounges and corridors of the ship with "You are Beautiful," "C'est Magnifique," "Brazil," "Just in Time," and many others.

Now you can relive a wonderful night aboard the Big U at home and enjoy "Let's Dance On Board the SS United States!" Available on Spotify and iTunes, or take a listen on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpsMOhhhXik

A model of the SS United States' sister ship, SS America, was built using 270,000 toothpicks over the course of five years! Artist Wayne Kusy has also constructed toothpick sculptures of the Titanic, Lusitania, and the British clipper ship Cutty Sark.
Will the Big U be next? Do aluminum toothpicks exist? ‪#‎SSUSFullAhead‬
