Light on the Rocks - Caramulo #Portugal
(Click on the photo to view it large)

Photo description and details:
When I was shooting Sunset at Mountain Trail I looked back and saw the sun rays bathing this rock formation on the foreground and also the snowy top of Serra da Estrela on the background. Just like in the previous photo, I love this golden and pinkish light...

Corsica | Landsat 8
The Mediterranean Sea’s most mountainous island, Corsica, dominates this image from the Landsat-8 satellite. About 40% of the island’s surface area is dedicated to nature reserves, and its mountains are a popular destination for hiking. For beachgoers, the island boasts over 1000 km of coastline.

Near the northeastern coast we can see the island’s largest coastal lagoon, the Etang de Biguglia. This nature reserve has been noted for its support of numerous breeding and wintering waterbirds, as well as the vulnerable Hermann’s tortoise and long-fingered bat.

This lagoon is one of the over 2000 sites worldwide considered to be wetlands of international importance by the Ramsar Convention, an intergovernmental treaty for the sustainable use of wetlands. World Wetlands Day is observed on February 2, the anniversary of the signing of the Convention.

ESA has been assisting the Ramsar Convention for a decade through the GlobWetland project, which provides satellite data to be used to monitor these precious resources. The next phase of the project, called GlobWetland Africa, will collaborate closely with ESA’s TIGER initiative, which trains African water authorities and researchers in exploiting satellite data and Earth observation technology for sustainable water resource management.

The Etang de Biguglia is not the island’s only Ramsar site: further inland in the central-north part of the island is an active raised bog, home to a number of protected bat, reptile, bird and amphibian species.

Other Ramsar sites on the island are two more coastal lagoons about halfway down the east coast, and a series of temporary pools in the south. These pools in the semi-arid granitic landscape are an uncommon geomorphological phenomenon in the region supporting a diversity of rare species.

Over the water in the upper-left section of the image we can see condensation trails, or 'contrails', from aircraft or ships.

Contrails form when exhaust particles act as nuclei around which water condenses, resulting in elongated cloud-like trails that can last anywhere from minutes to hours. They can also form persistent artificial cirrus clouds that can last for days or weeks, and can affect Earth’s climate by trapping heat in our atmosphere.

This image, also featured on the Earth from Space video program, was captured by Landsat-8 on August 29, 2014.

Moroccan Meteorite May Be a 4.4-Billion-Year-Old Chunk of Dark Martian Crust

Mars is often referred to as the Red Planet. But its signature color is only skin-deep – or, I should say, dust-deep. Beneath its rusty regolith Mars has many other hues and shades as well, from pale greys like those found inside holes drilled by Curiosity to large dark regions that are the result of ancient lava flows. Now, researchers think we may have an actual piece of one of Mars’ dark plains here on Earth in the form of a meteorite that was found in the Moroccan desert in 2011.

Aldeia de Cadraço - Caramulo #Portugal
(Click on the photo to view it large)

Photo description and details:
After shooting the sunset and cows, we came back to the Caramulo Hotel. On the road and near Cabeço da Neve we saw this little village called Cadraço. I had not notice it during the day, but at night it was lovely like this...

This somewhat odd photo is of a wind-twisted Pinyon Pine perching on the rim of Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah.  My friend Joseph Thompson dubbed it a “Donaldson Pine”, an obscure reference to The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever (by Stephen Donaldson).  I felt there was something very dramatic about the way this pinyon twisted back on itself to ease the brunt of the ever-present winds that howl up from the Canyon floor, so I wanted to capture its battered yet defiant spirit (which, if you know the Covenant novels, fits the concept perfectly).  Anyway, I hope the essence of the spirit of this proud tree communicates itself in the photo…

Sunset at Mountain Trail - Caramulo #Portugal
(Click on the photo to view it large)

Photo description and details:
I was driving my 4x4 through some mountain trails at Caramulo when I noticed the sun rays lighting the dry grass on this path. This was it. My quest was over. This was the right spot to shoot the sunset.

A minha busca tinha terminado.

Source of the Agadão River - Caramulo #Portugal
(Click on the photo to view it large)

Photo description and details:
A few days ago I was trying to find some old and historic villages lost in the Caramulo Mountains. I followed the hints given at the hotel reception. I drove for a few hours, but… nothing! I had no luck finding them…
In the meantime, I stumbled upon this waterfall which is very close to the river source. It is called the Agadão River...

Nada.

Introduction
"May I attain Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings.
However innumerable sentient beings are, I vow to save them.
However inexhaustible the defilements are, I vow to extinguish them.
However immeasurable the dharmas are, I vow to master them.
However incomparable enlightenment is, I vow to attain it.
All beings, without number, I vow to liberate
Endless blind passions I vow to uproot
Dharma gates beyond measure I vow to penetrate
The way of the Buddha I vow to attain
Beings are numberless; I vow to awaken with them.
Delusions are inexhaustible; I vow to end them.
Dharma gates are boundless; I vow to enter them.
Buddha's way is unsurpassable; I vow to become it.
I take refuge in The Buddha The Dharma and The Sangha
I take refuge in The Guru The Yidam and the Dakini
I take refuge in The Bodhisattvas The Protectors and The Tantras
Homage to all of you
As long as there is suffering
As long as there are sentient beings in the 6 realms
May I never attain Enlightenment
And never cross over into Nirvana
The passions of delusion are inexhaustible.
I vow to extinguish them all at once.
The number of beings is endless. I vow to help save them all.
The Truth cannot be told. I vow to tell it.
The Way which cannot be followed is unattainable. I vow to attain it.
May I be a guard for those who are protectorless,
A guide for those who journey on the road;
For those who wish to go across the water,
May I be a boat, a raft, a bridge.
May I be an isle for those who yearn for landfall,
And a lamp for those who long for light;
For those who need a resting place, a bed,
For all who need a servant, may I be a slave.
May I be the wishing jewel, the vase of plenty,
A word of power, and the supreme remedy.
May I be the trees of miracles,
And for every being, the abundant cow.
Like the great earth and the other elements,
Enduring as the sky itself endures,
For the boundless multitude of living beings,
May I be the ground and vessel of their life.
Thus, for every single thing that lives,
In number like the boundless reaches of the sky,
May I be their sustenance and nourishment
Until they pass beyond the bounds of suffering
Countless sentient beings, I vow to help to cross the ocean of existence.
Eternal Sufferings, I vow to end.
Innumerable spiritual methods, I vow to study and comprehend.
The buddha's unsurpassable supreme Dharma, I vow to realize.
