It’s January in Minnesota and the last thing you’re probably thinking about is your roof. But snowy, cold weather can cause ice dams to form on your roof if you’re not careful. An “ice damn” is essentially ice build-up that accumulates under packed snow on sloped roofs. When the ice layer begins to melt, the water trickles down and refreezes when it reaches the edge, or eave, of the roof. Soon enough, you’ve got a frozen barrier which will trap the rest of the snow and ice on your roof.

Without proper care and attention, ice dams can cause substantial damage to your roof and lead to leaks in the ceilings, walls and insulation. Ice dams can also cause mold and mildew problems that are harmful to you and your family.

Not all home insurance policies will cover damage caused by ice dams, so it is important to read your policy and understand what it covers. Take proactive steps to prevent ice dams this winter.

If your property has been damaged by ice dams and your insurance company isn’t willing to pay your claim, our attorneys may be able to help. Contact us at (952) 388-0289 or via e-mail at info@rsjlawfirm.com to schedule a free 30-minute consultation with one of our attorneys.
