Hello, Reuben! From what I've seen XNA has pretty much replaced DirectX, and I really haven't seen a comparable replacement for XNA. I'm not sure how long MS is planning on supporting it, or if they're looking at v5. There's a lot of competition in the game world now, especially with Unity on the rise, so it's hard to know if MS will keep competing being that the WP SDK is free and fairly limited in scope, supporting only few different MS platforms and not having a viable web platform. This is likely why MS doesn't seem to invest too much in it, since they're really in it for the $$$. The market really appears to be favoring browser-based applications, too. Of course, with game dev being so popular these days, it would behoove them to keep on top of it as a means of bolstering sales of their Visual Studio. Just my $0.02 worth. :-)

Gah learning so many new things. Going to have to create a new series. I guess these oldies are still good for elementary use and getting the gist of how things work.

Too late to start something new. Don't wanna turn in just yet...

What do I do? Stare blankly at G+, waiting for something to tick or twitch.

Wow! I sure wish I'd had that, back in the day! For years I've muddled through ideas and incredibly limited support to get where I am. The gamedev community really does regard VB game design as a "black art". hahah

In this Visual Basic beginner programming tutorial, I'll be walking you through the creation of your own sound class to help you implement music and sound effects in your game.

With mciSendString you'll be able to play multiple sounds simultaneously, as well as control their volume, and stop sounds as desired.

In spite of its limitations, it's a pretty handy tool for adding sound to your app.

Thanks, Frank! :-) I hope it's helpful. It's not super fast paced, though... I really should stop making tutorials when I'm ridiculously tired. haha

The third installment in my GDI game programming series for visual basic. This video steps you through creating a 2D tilemap from a tileset. The first part of the video illustrates how I organized my tileset and created seamless tiles. It's a bit long winded, so if you want to skip the graphics part and go straight into tile mapping, you can just skip to (12:36).

Ugh... Motivation is poop. I should be bursting with excitement and supermegahappyjoy on account of recent discoveries, but instead I'm just sleepy, and unmotivated.

Ooooh, that's right ~ it's almost WINTER! sniff

I so sosososoooo hate winter. :-P

Introduction
Why, hello there! You can call me Aardaerimus (Arr-dār-ĭ-mŭs).

I'm a bit of a goofball, wanna-be VB game programmer, code hobbyist, and seeker of fame and fortune (preferably the latter). *wink wink nudge nudge*

I've been working on series of YouTube tutorials geared toward Visual Basic programmers that want to learn game programming. It's been a lot of fun and I'm constantly learning new techniques. My videos can be found here:

Sooooo, anyway... I'm exploring G+ to see how it compares to Ye Olde Facebook... We'll see what happens. :-P
