From October 2008 to March 2011 BBC Scotland ran online debates in conjunction with the TV series "A History of Scotland". The debates are now closed, but the results are archived for viewing. Of particular interest is the following Question:

"The role of the clans: Scottish clans today are more about attracting American dollars than preserving Scottish heritage."

Follow the link to see the results, and I would suggest reading through the comments, they are very informative.
