I loved this passage. It's not that he is right or wrong about Indianapolis -- it's just one guy's opinion fer crying out loud -- it's the thoughts regarding mediocrity that I find so appealing. Reject mediocrity, provide a vision of what can be.

"That’s why I don’t live there. Because that’s not good enough for me. I may not be perfect, but I aspire to more than mediocrity. I don’t expect any city to be perfect or all the way there yet. You can inspire people, including me, to join your army to take hamburger hill or to get behind the rock and push, if you provide a vision of what can be. That’s one reason people are planting their flag in Detroit. It’s the hope of the possible."

If you ever want to hire me, work with me, or work for me, we'll both be better off if you read this first. A classic at this point, so many gems in here: http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/print/9137708/Opinion_The_unspoken_truth_about_managing_geeks

So that seems fine, as far as it goes, but there is also the issue that even if you remove all the bottlenecks between design and development, you still face the problem of having to go back a year or two later asking "Wait, anyone remember how we did this?" Valid or not, I think that's a pretty significant driver for documentation.

Interesting post for anyone interested in CoffeeScript. As a heavy user and big fan of CoffeeScript, I mature enough to agree there are definitely some good points in here. Also some things we don't see eye-to-eye on. CoffeeScript is quite flexible and certainly makes it easy for a developer or team of developers to shoot themselves in the foot.

I got a good chuckle out of the whitespace issue. Perhaps that's just because I'm such a big fan of Python.

In the end, I'm still a big fan of CoffeeScript and will likely continue to use it on any project big enough to warrant a build process.
