ESPN's story highlights speculative health concerns about synthetic turf fields containing crumb rubber infill. These claims continue to resurface in spite of multiple studies that have shown no elevated risk compared to playing on natural turf and soil. With an estimated 4.5 billion square feet of synthetic turf in use around the world—including national and international sport leagues, universities, schools and parks departments—most have investigated these concerns and concluded there is no elevated risk to children.

To address these recurring concerns, many local schools have tested their own fields independently. In each and every case including the most recent by Glendale, California, the results showed no cause for alarm or concern.

The Synthetic Turf Council (STC) serves as a clearinghouse for more than 50 studies—including many by local, state and federal agencies—that have addressed various concerns and found each to be unfounded. To provide further assurance, the synthetic turf industry recently adopted voluntarily infill testing guidelines based upon the European Toy Standard, in order to compare infill to everyday products. We remain open to and supportive of any additional testing that may finally put these unfounded concerns to rest.

The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI), Washington, has released a letter they sent in mid-October to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Gina McCarthy calling for a response to growing public concern over the safety of synthetic turf made with crumb rubber. This public fear has grown out of a number of media reports attempting to draw a correlation between recycled rubber in turf and adverse health effects, despite more than 75 studies that indicate otherwise, ISRI says. The letter, signed by ISRI President Robin Wiener, is aimed easing such concerns. http://ow.ly/TXKIH
