Circles seem to be mostly designed around privacy concerns, but they are also useful for stemming information overload; you can view posts only from selected groups of people.

I'd like to see Google leverage its data crunching prowess by including automatic circle grouping functionality. Adding people to circles manually all the time is annoying to me. Circles could be grouped according to the kind of content that people post that overlap with your interests. Say a contact posts country music videos and startup articles. Your interests (determined by your own google searches and plus posts) that overlap with this contact are startups. Google could automatically create a "startup" group that includes this contact, possibly even filtering out non-relevant posts from this contact.

Hmm... I hope this where they are going with sparks. You actually wouldn't even need to have automatically-grouped circles. You could just have keyword streams like you can set up with sparks, that only returns posts from your contacts that fit the keyword context. Then you could maintain circles just from a privacy standpoint and use stream "running queries" for information overload content management...
