MY TAKE ON SOPA and PIPA (this is the closest to writing a book as I have ever gotten) :
As a musician piracy affects me EVERY DAY. In fact I can guarantee you, without any doubts that several people are downloading my music right now for free. My songs have been downloaded MILLIONS (not thousands) of times through piracy. Thus proving that mankind's standards for quality music has been lowered significantly over the years (ha ha) . I am far from being a Bruce Springsteen or Vic Damon. I don't have Sony backing me. Piracy directly affects whether or not I release new music, how big the productions are, pay scale for contributing musicians and etc. Piracy really does suck BUT FREEDOM OF SPEECH and the FREEDOM to disseminate information to the masses is FAR MORE IMPORTANT TO ME and the future of my children. I am not one of those types who just follows the crowd and jumps on the band wagon. I have researched SOPA in detail. I have to conclude that IT IS BAD LAW. It cannot be adjusted to be better either. SOPA as it is defiantly puts the internet and free speech as we know it in danger. This is not the way to address piracy. THIS IS NOT A PARTISAN SUBJECT either. There are plenty of lawmakers on both sides (and in the so called middle) that are pro-sopa and anti-sopa. I am a free market guy, but I am a FREEDOM of speech guy above everything, even if it hurts my bottom line. If you're still reading this then your attention span is much longer than mine (so applaud yourself) .
HOW DO I DEAL WITH PIRACY AS A CONTENT PRODUCER/ARTIST?
It's simple!!! I write, sing and produce from the heart and tell true stories about my life through music and lyric. I doubt very seriously that anyone who is pirating my music would have EVER bought it in the first place. I get letters all the time from people who say that they downloaded my music from a torrent or peer site and later decided that I am just not the kind of guy they wanted to steal from (paraphrasing that of course). Obviously my formula can't work for everyone and overall I am against piracy personally because it does in fact put people out of work and is just wrong. That's just how I roll. Not everyone is like me. But, I sure as hell don't think we need laws that restrict our most sacred freedoms over it.
