At Selly Oak, a range of products such as grab rails, door handles, light switches, taps, over-bed tables and toilet seats, were replaced with copper surfaces.

The results showed that with normal cleaning, the copper surfaces were found to have up to 90% fewer organisms on them than items made from other materials such as stainless steel.

While other agents such as chlorine and hydrogen peroxide have had similar short-term effects, copper has the longest lasting impact.

[…] results obtained indicates that the TiO2-coated surfaces show antibacterial activity with all microorganisms tested highlighting that the titania could be used in the ceramic and building industry for the production of coated surfaces to be placed in microbiologically sensitive environments, such as the hospital and food industry.

A negative washroom experience could color one’s whole impression of an occasion.

This was particularly true of American respondents with 53 percent claiming that a poor washroom visit had had a negative effect on their overall enjoyment while 20 percent said it had actually ruined their experience completely.

Almost 40 percent of guests went on to tell a friend or family member about it while a few even posted on social media

American visitors were even more likely to “share” their experiences on the net with around 13 percent of US respondents claiming to have posted about their washroom visit.

C. difficile is difficult to remove through cleaning as it is resistant to some disinfectants and can remain on surfaces for up to five months.

Researchers testing 146 hospital rooms over the course of one year found C. difficile on 22.9 percent of surfaces tested before terminal cleaning, and 10.6 percent of surfaces tested after terminal cleaning.

Spores from C. difficile bacteria are passed in feces and spread to food, surfaces and objects when people who are infected don’t wash their hands thoroughly.

These spores can persist in a room for weeks or months.

If you touch a surface contaminated with C. difficile spores, you may then unknowingly swallow the bacteria.

C. diff (Clostridium Difficile) is a bacteria that lives in the human intestine and is typically found in older patients in hospitals or long-term care facilities, especially during or after a round of antibiotics, which disrupts healthy gut bacteria, allowing C. diff to flourish.

C. diff affects approximately 500 thousand individuals in the U.S. every year, with symptoms ranging from abdominal pain, fever, and diarrhea, to colitis (a dangerous inflammation of the colon) and potentially leading to death.

In October of 2017, California Governor Jerry Brown approved Assembly Bill No. 1127.

According to the new addition to additions to the California Health and Safety Code,

This bill would require new construction or renovation of a public building, as specified, that is owned by a state or a local agency, or a portion of a building that is owned by a state or local agency and includes at least one restroom that is open to the public, to provide at least one safe, sanitary, convenient, and publicly accessible baby diaper changing station, as specified.

The bill would require each station to be maintained, repaired, and replaced as necessary to ensure safety and ease of use, and to be cleaned with the same frequency as the restroom in which it is located.

By imposing a higher level of service on local agencies, the bill would impose a state-mandated local program.

Additionally,

This bill would require various facilities, including a theater, sports arena, or library, to install and maintain at least one baby diaper changing station if the facility is open to the public, as specified.
