On October 15, 1860, 11-year-old Grace Bedell wrote a letter to Abraham Lincoln, urging him to grow a beard to help him get elected. In Lincoln's written response he gave no promises, but a month later allowed his beard to grow. He and Grace later met as he campaigned in her hometown of Westfield, NY.
