Thanks to Benoit Touchette and Nathan Osman, GIMP now natively supports WebP images, both loading and exporting, with ICC profiles, Exif/XMP metadata, and animation. The new feature will be available in GIMP 2.9.6.
The two images in this post are an animation in WebP created with GIMP and a screenshot demonstrating exporting options.
WebP is a both lossless and lossy file format for images. According to many tests, it has superior compression algorithms and smaller file size in comparison to that of JPEG. To learn more about WebP please see https://developers.google.com/speed/webp/
