As an Artist Vermeer is often praised for his careful compositions, transparent colors, and brilliant use of light.
His art was not well-known outside of Delft during his lifetime.

Saint Sebastian, a Symbolist work par excellence, depicts a woman kneeling in front of the famous martyr, whose face and naked arrow-pierced body emanate a powerful sensuality. This work is also known as Votive Offering, due to the placard shown in the lower background, and to the posture and demeanor of the characters.

Known as the "Father of Impressionism", Pissarro painted rural and urban French life, particularly landscapes in and around Pontoise, as well as scenes from Montmartre. His mature work displays an empathy for peasants and laborers, and sometimes evidences his radical political leanings. He was a mentor to Paul Cezanne and Paul Gauguin and his example inspired many younger artists, including Californian Impressionist Lucy Bacon.

Vrubel tried himself at various artistic media such as applied art (ceramics, majolica, stained glass), architectural masks, stage set and costume design, and even architecture. His talent proved truly universal: in everything he did, and he could do almost everything, was the search for a lucid beautiful style. This search eventually made Vrubel the true founder of Russian Art Nouveau, a style that partially grew out of Russian neo-romanticism.

Nearly all works of art created by Marc Franz show animals. He liked animals and saw in them innocent beings in harmony with nature. He wanted to paint the world out of the perspective of the animal.
