VWBPE 2017 Legacy: Announcing Keynotes

Keynotes as Legacy

“Originality must compound with inheritance.”
Harold Bloom, The Western Canon: The Books and School of the Ages

At the upcoming Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education Conference we will celebrate ten years of education, art, science, discussion, and networking using immersive virtual environments in education. We will reflect upon those ten years of a fantastic Legacy in virtual worlds, then we will turn to look forward to what the future holds for us.

We are delighted to announce the keynote speakers for this year’s VWBPE conference. Our excitement is compounded by the fact that all three individuals have been involved as long as, and even longer than, VWBPE in virtual worlds. These visionaries are Dr. Celia Pearce (SL: Artemesia Sandgrain), Chris Dede (SL: Chris Olejniczak) and John Lester (SL: Pathfinder Lester).

It is exciting for us to introduce each keynote speaker along with dates and times for their presentations. Consult the full program schedule for location and other details when the conference calendar becomes available.

Many thanks to all who attended our last sponsorship social! We raised $325 USD and 23,600 Lindens! We appreciate your generosity and commitment to making VWBPE 2017 Conference possible!

Be sure to mark your calendars for the next VWBPE Sponsorship Social, “The Roaring 20s” on Thursday, February 16, 2017 at 5:00 pm SLT. Enjoy an evening with friends and colleagues at this sponsorship social event; all donations go toward supporting this year’s VWBPE Conference.

The Roaring 20s were legendary in American history, and it’s a perfect theme for the second fundraising social to benefit the VWBPE Conference 2017. Yes, we will be dancing the night away at the historic Cotton Club!

The incomparable DJ Coz OKelly will on hand to spin Jazz and Blues tunes, once again donating his time in support of VWBPE. Wear your most daring 1920’s outfits, the one with the deepest pockets! All donations are welcome, and while cash contributions (USD) are preferred, Linden dollars are also accepted.

The Roaring 20s were a time of change socially and in the fashion world. Ladies, open your wardrobes and find your most fashionable flapper outfits adorned with beading, sequins, fringe, and even some feathers – and don’t forget to bob your hair! Gents, wear your spiffiest pinstriped suits with vests (lots of full pockets!), tuxedos and black shirts with black or white ties. Top off your fashion statement with a fedora, and don’t forget your pocket watch, hip flask and wing tips. Regardless of what you have to wear, come join us for an evening of fun!

See you at the Cotton Club!

VWBPE 2017 Call for Volunteers

It takes a village of volunteers to organize a conference like the Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education (VWBPE) Conference. Our volunteers come from a wide array of backgrounds, countries, and cultures. We need dozens of individuals like you, to support everything we do at the conference from greeting participants to mentoring presenters to streaming presentations. Not only do you get to help us promote and share educational approaches in Virtual Worlds, but you have an opportunity to connect with thousands of conference goers across multiple platforms.

The 2017 conference celebrates our 10th anniversary with the theme “Legacy”. VWBPE has created a legacy around the proposition that building a professional community of individuals who hunger for innovation is possible without the constricting walls of physical space. As a volunteer, you become an important part of this legacy.

VWBPE 2017 will be held March 29th to April 1st. If you would like to help at the upcoming conference, we would be delighted to have you. We are calling for volunteers to fill the following roles:

Hosts (formerly known as Meet & Greet)
Mentors
Quadrivium Facilitator
Quadrivium Assistant
Technical Support
Volunteer Media Stream Team

Training for Volunteers will begin in mid-March for most positions. One of our team will contact you, with information about training, schedule sign-ups and a couple of Volunteer Committee events you are invited to attend.

For more information about each role and to sign up, the Call for Volunteers is up and available for you. If you still need more information, you can use the form at the bottom of that page and we’ll be happy to answer any questions you might have about volunteering for VWBPE.

For more updates and news, visit the website: https://vwbpe.org – we have some very exciting events lined up that you won’t want to miss!

We cannot do this without our Wonderful Volunteers! Come join the fun!

VWBPE 2017 Immersive Experiences – Deadline 27 January

What sets virtual world education apart?
What is the role of play in our practice?
What types of immersive experiences are we developing to enhance teaching and learning?

These questions are at the heart of the Immersive Experiences category at the Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education conference.

Invite the (virtual) world to your space to play and learn! The Immersive Experiences activities will be scheduled in the two weeks pre-conference and one week post-conference, to give participants time to play, immerse, and engage with your location, be it a 3D virtual world or a gaming environment.

This year we have included the opportunity to present a “Retrospective” presentation in recognition of our 10-year LEGACY. Within all categories of presentations, you can feature lessons, new research or updates, to your original presented work and share in the legacy you helped to create for those who follow.

Detailed application information about all categories of proposals, including Immersive Experiences, can be found on the Call for Proposals page in this website: https://vwbpe.org/conference/vwbpe17-legacy-call-for-proposals.

The available proposal categories for VWBPE 2017 are as follows:
- Academic (presentation and paper)
- Communities of Practice (presentation, no paper)
- Creative
- Exhibits
- Machinima
- Immersive Experiences

Remember:
January 27, 2017: LAST DAY for proposal submissions
