Asia's first "ghost port" in China

One of the busiest container terminals in China and in the world is actually a no man's land, as the port is fully-automated.

The terminal located in Qingdao, a port city by the Yellow Sea in Shandong Province, began to operate on Thursday, 11 May 2017. From that day on, machines and trucks work autonomously day and night without a break.

This is what a Chinese journalist noted when visited the port: "Machines and trucks were busy moving on their own in the darkness, as containers were being unloaded 24/7 from a giant cargo ship."

The entire operation is controlled by artificial intelligence. Through laser scanning and positioning, the machine is able to locate the four corners of container and grab them, then place the container onto a truck.

The driverless trucks are powered by electricity, with their routes and tasks under digital control, including when it's time for them to go for a recharge.

While it unusually requires 60 workers to unload a cargo ship, this new port requires only nine. And the workers, instead of operating the machines in cranes, now sit in the office before a computer.

This Robot Completes a 2-Hour Brain Surgery Procedure in Just 2.5 Minutes

"Brain surgery is precision business, and one slip can spell doom for affected patients. Even in one of the most skilled jobs in the world, human error can still be a factor. Researchers from the University of Utah are looking to provide less opportunity for those errors to occur. A robot that the team is developing is able to reduce the time it takes to complete a complicated procedure by 50 times. According to CNN, the robot can reduce the time it takes to drill into the skull from two hours to two-and-a-half minutes..."

Researchers Test 3D Printing Bionic Devices Directly Onto the Skin

"Researchers have tested 3D printing directly onto our bodies. In the work, a pressure sensor was printed directly on a dummy hand is a step toward new biomedical devices, "on the fly" wearable technology, and more..."

3D-printed bacteria could make bespoke graphene-like materials

"How do you make a bespoke material with graphene-like properties? By putting bacteria to work using a 3D printer.

Such bacteria could create brand new materials. For example, if you could use bacteria to print a substance resembling graphene – the 2D material made of single-atom layers of carbon – the end product might have similar desirable properties.

When placed on sheets of graphene oxide, certain bacteria can turn it into a reduced version of the compound, which shares many properties with graphene but is easier to produce in large amounts. The bacteria do this by pulling oxygen atoms off the material as they metabolise..."
