Hattie's Hat is typically the best answer to: "So -- what's open for food in Ballard right now?" A long-time staple for Ballard Hipsters, Hattie's is a dive bar / comfort food restaurant located in the heart of The People's Republic of Ballard. They are usually open and serving food. They sometimes play strange movies in the back, and they're open on most days where everybody else is closed. If drinking is your thing, they seem to attract regulars. If food is more your goal, then it's pretty decent. A bit spendy for what you get, but at least it's tasty. I think that the Chicken Fried Chicken sandwich is probably the best thing there. My only complaint is that I wish the batter was somewhat spicy. Alternatively, the Chicken Fried Chicken dinner plate is pretty amazing as well. They're known for their buttermilk fried chicken dishes, and that's really what I'd recommend (though it's all pretty decent and hits that spot). Breakfast items are pretty standard and tasty. It reminds me a bit of Easy Street Records over in West Seattle (if you're ever eaten there). Hearty, starchy, fatty comfort food that is in no way, shape, or form considered "healthy". Nothin' else like it.

This is one of my favourite places to go for a good, filling, and reasonably healthy meal.

Cool place to meet up with friends but drinks are way overpriced.

Ol' Con's Chicken Fried Chicken Sandwich is likely the BEST chicken, nay, SANDWICH I HAVE EVER EATEN!!! The chicken is crispy and has just the right amount of moisture. Topped with what I call "perfect" bacon. I went with the blue cheese salad; good size portion for the $2.49 extra. Blue Cheese was really good with the wings. I also had the hot wing with original buffalo sauce. The wings have been improved since my last visit. While the wings don't have the wow factor that the chicken sandwich does, I have no complaints. Nice place, relaxed service. Oh, and Stella Artois on tap! I will go back and try the meatloaf. They also serve a rib for $1.50, what a great idea while having a beer.

A Seattle institution, with stiff drinks, reasonably-priced drafts and great comfort foods you can enjoy at the bar, counter or among giant aquaria in the backroom.
