Whatever the announcement, this is still so terribly exciting.
Scientists are set to make a major announcement Thursday on efforts to pinpoint the existence of gravitational waves, or ripples of space and time that transport energy across the universe.

"Following on from last year’s historic climate change deal, in which 195 nations promised to mitigate man-made greenhouse gas emissions, France has demonstrated that it is beginning to pull its weight. The French government has just announced that it will pave 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) of road with durable, photovoltaic panels, which will provide solar energy to 5 million people across the republic, according to Global Construction Review."

"The pair are 6,900 times further apart than the Earth and Sun, which is 0.1 light-years or 140 times the distance to Pluto. “The planet is not quite as lonely as we first thought, but it’s certainly in a very long distance relationship,” said University of Hertfordshire's Deacon in a statement."
A parental star has been found for a planet previously thought to be wandering unaccompanied through space. Dr. Niall Deacon and Dr. Simon Murphy have found that the object known as 2MASS J2126−8140 is not, in fact, an isolated body, but is instead accompanied by, and probably orbits, a small red dwarf. Nevertheless, they are still puzzled by the enormous distance between planet and star.

As an ex-Muslim, I cannot begin to express the number of ways in which our voices are silenced. We are cast out of conversations about our own communities and lives, we are refused platforms in mainstream media to avoid offending Muslim sentiments, and more recently we are viciously targeted on social media. Where enough complaints against content can not only have it removed for no real reason, but also have our social media accounts suspended entirely; it leaves us abruptly cut off from the only place we've safely managed to tell our stories and form an outspoken community.

(Phys.org)—NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has once again proven that it is an excellent tool to search for rotating neutron stars emitting beams of electromagnetic radiation, known as pulsars. A team of astronomers, led by H. Thankful Cromartie of the University of Virginia, has recently used the 305-meter Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico to observe unidentified sources of gamma rays detected by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboar...

My blog.
Microcephaly is a nuerological disorder, which results due to the abnormal development of the brain inside the womb, or the brain not growing at the expected rate after birth. As a result the heads of infants are signigicantly smaller than their counterparts, which can mean loss of brain tissue, smaller cerebellums, calcium deposits and unusually smooth brains. It can be caused due to genetic conditions (such as Down Syndrome), malnourished, diab...

Happy Birthday Dr. Salam.
Yesterday, January 29, was the day Dr. Mohammad Abdus Salam – till recently Pakistan's only Nobel Laureate – was born. Dr. Salam was a physicist who contributed to electroweak unification (Google it.It is very important!). There were no mentions in the media. No ceremonies or accolades. Because he was from the Ahmadiyya Community and left Pakistan due to persecution a long time ago. The following ironic tweet explains it best: Prof #AbdusSalam ...

One of the least acknowledged - and most original - thinkers in astronomy is being acknowledged by Google Doodle. Beatrice Tinsley was responsible for breakthrough discoveries on how galaxies moved with time but her name is virtually unknown outside academic circles. Born in England, she spent most of her schooling in New Zealand before moving to Texas, achieving recognition for her work by the late 1970s. Here are five facts about New Zealand's ...

"In findings published this week in the journal Nature Materials, researchers at the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering and the BioFrontiers Institute describe new light-activated therapeutic nanoparticles known as “quantum dots.” The dots, which are about 20,000 times smaller than a human hair and resemble the tiny semiconductors used in consumer electronics, successfully killed 92 percent of drug-resistant bacterial cells in a lab-grown culture. "
In the ever-escalating evolutionary battle with drug-resistant bacteria, humans may soon have a leg up thanks to adaptive, light-activated nanotherapy...
