Motorsport and automotive radiator internal erosion testing for vehicle manufacturers, racing teams, military and aviation development departments. Radiators are commonly known within the industry as heat exchangers; these heat exchangers or radiators are continuously subjected to varying amounts of pressure, pulsation, fluid flow, temperature and heat cycling of the fluid in the vehicle cooling system. This coolant maybe based on ethylene glycol, OAT, propylene glycol, nanofluids, water wetters or some modified liquid. At the Young Calibration Test Laboratory can simulate the erosive and corrosive processes the radiator and associated components maybe subjected to during its life cycle conditions. These elevated simulated tests of varying nature allow the manufacturers to accelerate component development and vastly improve the component durability in very short test times. To help the laboratory achieve this, dedicated fluid flow test rigs, with liquid pumps, flow meters, temperature, pressure and aeration sensors drive and monitor system conditions, pushing the components into highly accelerated stress conditions on a cyclic basis. Tests are often conducted to industry standards such as ASTM D2570 or customer specific tests from BMW, Daimler, Fiat, Ford, Nissan, Toyota and Volkswagen. Pressures up to 6 bar, Temperatures to 150°C, flow to 750 lpm and aeration to 300 cc/min can be simulated on all types of cab heaters, low temperature coolers and radiators.

Why is flowmeter calibration important?
Flowmeters are used in processes throughout the world for simple non-critical measurements to super critical measurements such as cooling of nuclear reactors. Understanding the process of flow measurement is often overlooked and in many cases also taken for granted. How many times have you looked at a display or gauge and said yes that’s reading OK!

To ensure you have accurate measurements, the flowmeter accuracy needs to be ascertained. To do this, firstly and foremost you must ensure the meter is supplied with a calibration certificate and subsequently the meter undertakes regular accredited calibration to understand your meters performance over time, more commonly known as drift. Good calibration practices reduce risk, saves money and ensures informed and correct decisions are made.

Why should you appoint an accredited laboratory?
Because nowadays there are many organisations offering unrealistic and false assumptions on flowmeter calibration. There are many so called “traceable calibrations” offered by organisations that have very little understanding of flow measurement systems, where they think purchasing a meter from a brochure which states a 0.1% accuracy, the so-called organisation (this is where we should not call them a laboratory) thinks they can offer calibrations to 0.1% accuracy. Speak to any reputable calibration laboratory and you will get impartiality and a complete line of measurement traceability you can trust. This is backed up with validated technical procedures, a comprehensive Quality Management System, evidence that all attributable components of uncertainty have been evaluated, independent assessment and a calibration certificate legally enforceable in a court of law. A good source for the calibration of flowmeters is your accredited laboratory as they offer independent and impartial advice. You will only achieve this when using an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratories, and here in the United Kingdom, this will be accredited by UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service). Does a UKAS accredited calibration cost more?
Firstly, when comparing different organisations that offer flow meter calibration, the answer is NO; a UKAS accredited calibration does not necessarily mean it will cost more. There are many UKAS accredited laboratories offering lower cost accredited calibrations than the non-accredited loosely termed “traceable calibration”. Secondly, when comparing a single laboratory, then YES, you will find many instances where accredited calibrations are costlier then the “traceable calibration”, this being purely down to financial implications of gaining and maintaining accreditation, as this comes at a significant cost.
