Irritable bowel syndrome and gut microbiota

In analyzing fecal and mucosal #microbiota from patients with #IBS and healthy individuals, A study identified an #intestinal microbiota profile that associates with the severity of IBS symptoms.

The flowgram below shows the global method used in this study. From fecal and biopsy sample of IBS patients and healthy controls, Whole DNA was extracted and sequenced. Bioinformatics and machine learning approaches help to pick up gut bacterial species which were associated with IBS symptoms severity.

Microbiote intestinal et fibres alimentaire

La richesse et la stabilité de notre #microbiote intestinal, soit l’ensemble des bactéries que nous hébergeons dans notre tube digestif, sont des paramètres importants pour le bon fonctionnement de cette symbiose que constituent l’Homme et son écosystème intestinal. Les chercheurs de l’Inra, en collaboration avec le CRNH Rhône-Alpes ont réalisé une étude sur des sujets minces et en bonne santé, avec un apport contrôlé en fibres. Les résultats montrent que les microbiotes les plus riches, c’est-à-dire présentant la plus grande diversité d’espèces de bactéries, s’observent chez des individus qui consomment la plus grande diversité d’aliments riches en fibres et ce sont les plus stables.

Using gut microbiota to detect colon cancer

Dear Science community, I'm quite happy to share with you my last co-authors article about #colon #cancer detection using the gut #metagenomics.  Combining this new #metagenomics test with the standard FOBT allowed to detect > 70% of colon cancer even at early stage. We also observed a metabolic shift in the gut #microbiota in cancer patient with a decrease of dietary fiber degradation and an increase of host carbohydrate utilization.

sweeteners, glucose and (of course) gut microbiota

A recent paper published in Nature show that #sweeteners could have inverse effect on glucose tolerance. Gut #microbiota may play an important role. "we demonstrate that consumption of commonly used NAS formulations drives the development of glucose intolerance through induction of compositional and functional alterations to the intestinal microbiota"

I have made a short review about recent discoveries about the gut #microbiota within the IHMC consortium. I included two major paper which was published recently. This includes new resources, methods and clinical application for researchers.

Professor Paul O’Toole of University College Cork (Ireland) recently gave a seminar as part of the Collège de France symposium: Diet-Microbiota-Health Interactions in #Elderly People. Afterward, he took the time to speak with Gut Microbiota for Health about the event.
He believe that loss of #diversity in different ways is impactful in different conditions at different stages in the life span. But the key question is: What actually is changing in the #microbiota?
