Today, we share the story of La Belle Otero, one of the most celebrated of Paris' courtesans and stage performers. This is our most ambitious post, to date, and we hope you will enjoy it.

In my more mundane identity, I share a tiny bit of the history of Red Poulaine and our new blog, Red Poulaine's Musings.
Earlier this year, the Etsy shop I share with my husband, Red Poulaine, started offering vintage postcards and photographs, among its other vintage offerings. Quickly, the vintage images had so caught our imaginations that we have transformed our shop, with the bulk of our offerings being cards and photographs from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. These cards provide some of the most accessible examples of early photography and include subject matter as diverse as architecture and landscape, baby photos, family shots, people at work, and celebrities. Some of our favorite subjects are Pierrot and Columbine, Mignon, romantic hand-tinted images of couples, "risqué" photos (more suggestive than explicit), and the stage performers who thrilled the audiences of Paris music halls during La Belle Époque (the Beautiful Era).

Our fascination with these cards and our desire to share the history of the medium and, whenever possible, behind each of the images we sell, has resulted in the accumulation of a small body of knowledge about our subject matter and the desire to share this more widely. Thus, on the first of this month, we started a blog, Red Poulaine's Musings. Yesterday's post was especially fun, and we are hoping that today's post (not yet up, but soon!) will be even more entertaining.
