My initial thoughts on the boxee live tv (http://www.boxee.tv/live
I was very excited to see this product launch as I am sure that DVR functionality is not far behind but there are some very fundamentally wrong things with the device.
The first thing that I noticed was that it took almost 10 minutes to do a scan of my channels. This is pretty damn bad and it gets worse, you will see why as you read on.
The second thing I noticed was that the scan didn't pick up all the channels. The boxee live was hooked up to the same indoor antennae that my tv was using. I had no problems getting all the channels on my tv, but i was missing channel 4, 7, and 9 on boxee live.
The third thing I noticed was that I had no ability to manually add a channel. I could not add channel 4, 7, or 9. The only thing that I could do was run another scan. I had to sit and wait for another 10 minutes to run another scan to TRY to get those channels.
The fourth thing I noticed was that since I couldn't manually add channels 4, 7, or 9, I was adjusting my antennae blindly to try to get those channels. I couldn't even hook up the antennae back to my tv to check adjustments since my tv was already getting the channels just fine. I then had to wait 10 minutes for a scan to run to see if my antennae adjustments did anything. Of course the adjustments would add a channel but remove a channel, ie. channel 4 would come in, but channel 2 would drop out. (If I plugged my antennae into my tv, I would still get both channels.) How many adjustments will a normal person really do if they have to wait 10 minutes to see the results of one antennae adjustment???
The fifth thing I noticed was that the actually boxee live tv unit was hot. Really really hot. When I first touched it, I just thought that it was warm. After about 20 seconds, I literally dropped it as I felt my hand start to burn.
So what now?
Maybe i will just go and buy a massive outdoor antennae so that I can get perfect reception, though that is still no guarantee the boxee live unit will pick up all the channels.
Maybe i will hack a broken xbox360 heat sink onto the unit to keep it cool so that it won't leave burn marks on my entertainment center. (I had to use the enclosed usb extender as the unit won't fit directly into the back of the boxee box if you are hardwired therefore the unit was resting on my entertainment center.)
Or maybe it will just sit next to my 32mB usb sticks as paperweights.
I think that I will just eat the cost on this unit in hopes that boxee makes the improvements to address the different things that affected me. They so far seem to be making decent improvements to the boxee box with each update, except for that stint where playback from local NAS devices became utterly horrible using SMB requiring the switch to NFS.
Overall, I feel like a kid that only got socks for Christmas, i was looking forward to so much and got so little. Now i am waiting for boxee to make things right for next Christmas. But I sure as hell hope they really don't wait that long.
