Fatuma, in Malawi, uses a shell and bamboo as tools to construct her pots. I am hoping to give this pot to my mother in Texas.

Michael and Fatuma work on our first assignment...a hand pulled pot made from the dirt of a termite mound. This first Tuesday, we were given a syllabus, detailing each day's assignment.

Maggie, in her dining room uniform, in Malawi.  Not only did she do the laundry, but she washed the dishes for the evening meal.

Thursday, in Malawi. Aidan's group is leaving the pottery school. The Presbyterian missionaries have been making their dishes. It is a small world. One of the 5 has a brother that practices medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina, in Charleston.

It's Wednesday, one month ago. The pottery school had 4 types of clay. I wanted to make something with each type of clay. Here is the beginning of a sculpture, inspired by Asa, reaching up to hug SK. Malawi is called the Heart of Africa.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner! During the evening meal, always in the dark, little boats with a single light, dot the lake. Other guests, from around the world, were always present at each meal.

Nanc, when you look at this picture, are we seeing the sand which leads to the lake?

This is a view of the Nkakotahota Pottery Lodge, 4 units. I was in the 3rd unit, with a beautiful sunrise view, over Lake Malawi.

Dedza is a town in the mountains of Malawi. The pottery factory in Dezda makes dishes for 10 hotels in Malawi; hand thrown and painted! The small lodge at the factory is where I spent my 1st night. On the way down the mountain we stopped for lunch at a mission that has beautiful carvings and masks; www.kasiyamaliro.org

Friday is my laundry day. Maggie, on my right, washed my clothes in Malawi. No washing machine. Scrub board. She hugged me everyday, and greeted everyone with a big smile.
