Queen Anne Architecture on Queen Anne Hill in Seattle

Ironically only a few specimens of the Queen Anne architecture (Victorian) survive on Queen Anne Hill. This is one of them. It is tucked away on a street of more “normal” houses.

In the late 1800’s a housing shortage in Seattle gave way to a real estate boom and at the time the Victorian style was the rage. Formerly known as Eden Hill by early pioneers, the name Queen Anne Town became a real estate copy and the name stuck, even as the style itself, with its elaborate and eccentric turrets, towers, balconies, wrapping porches, stained-glass bay windows, steeply pitched roofs, and bannister spindles, gave way before the preferences of Turn-of-the-Century Queen Anne residents who preferred Colonial Revival, Georgian Rival, or stuccoed Tudor Revival.
