I'm on my third reading of TSIS. Has anyone else been picking up on its implications for us as teachers of reading? For example, at the beginning of Chapter Five, Graff and Birkenstein rightly point out how often students misinterpret one author's position for another because they aren't paying attention to the voice markers like "or so it would seem" or "yet..."

On another note, I'm don't recall picking up on this in earlier reads. Another reason to encourage what Gallagher calls "second draft" (or my case, third draft) reading.
