As a keyboard-only user, I thought "Skip to content" links would be useful. In fact, they're not. Here's how to fix them.
If you've been doing web development for any amount of time, you have probably come across the recommendation to create a skip to content or skip navigation

+Nicholas Zakas  Please do write/blog about your experience as a keyboard-only user. I bet that would be a very interesting blog article to read and lots of learning for accessibility.

There's been a lot of talk recently about diversity in tech conferences. I'd like to share how we tackled this when planning the Front End Summit at Yahoo in 2011. While I'm not sure it's easy to replicate with public conferences, I think there are some important lessons nonetheless.
One of the last things I did before leaving Yahoo! was to help organize the Front End Summit along with James Long and David Calhoun. This is (was?) a yearly

I wasn't able to make it to YUIConf, but this is the talk I was going to give there.
This week I was scheduled to give a brand new talk at YUIConf entitled, JavaScript APIs you've never heard of (and some you have). Unfortunately, a scheduling

Always wondered why this happened... Just assumed the site was using some JS to mess with the touches on elements with a :hover or something crazy. Nice sleuthing!

Earlier this week, Microsoft released TypeScript, a new compile-to-JavaScript language for application scale JavaScript. My initial reaction was

Instead of creating a completely new language with new syntax rules, TypeScript starts with JavaScript and adds additional features that fit in with the syntax quite nicely.

This sounds good and interesting. Reminded me how when starting to program in Scala one can begin with familiar OOP style (of Java) and only introduce herself to Scala's functional features one by one.

If you would like to learn object-oriented programming in JavaScript from me, I'm now holding training classes for both individuals and companies. See attached for more information.
If you're coming from a more traditional object-oriented language such as C++ or Java, JavaScript might seem like it's not object-oriented it all. After all,

It's high time that we are taken seriously.
When I went to college I knew I wanted to work with computers but I didn't know what exactly I wanted to do. I had fallen in love with a Packard Bell
